Introduction:
The Freeman and The Free News are small-scale newspapers set-up and funded by mainland scholars who drifted to Hong Kong and Taiwan at the wake of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the newspapers is most noted for publishing pieces on Chinese Classical Studies, with a significant impact on the spread of Confucianism and other aspects of Chinese culture. This project aims to uncover the impact on Classical Studies in Hong Kong as reflected in the growth and fall of these two newspapers most significantly devoted to this area of scholarship. Upon the historical roles played by The Freeman and The Free News, Hong Kong’s importance in the evolution of Chinese Classical Studies at the cross-road of Chinese history as she emerges from civil strife that followed the demise of Imperialism.
