B.A. (Hons) in English Language & Literature and B.Ed. (Hons) in English Language Teaching

The B.A. (Hons) in English Language & Literature and B.Ed. (Hons) in English Language Teaching is a five-year full-time Double Degree programme. It provides thorough preparation and balanced emphasis in two distinct disciplines: English Language & Literature and Education Studies.

The Year 1 and Year 2 studies lay a solid and strong foundation for the students in the relevant areas. From Year 2 onwards, students may choose to enrol in a large variety of elective courses based on their areas of interest. School experience and supervised teaching practice are also carefully scheduled into the study plans.

The summer preceding Year III is when students embark on the highly popular and successful Overseas Immersion Programme. Lasting 8 weeks, the Immersion Programme is designed to enhance and expand student learning in an intensely English-speaking environment. Through participation in a variety of language tasks and cultural activities, students are expected to

1. become more confident and active users of English;
2. be able to use English with enhanced social appropriateness;
3. expand their professional reference points in terms of English language teaching and learning; and
4. enhance their cultural sensitivity and awareness.

The Double Degree programme provides students with deep knowledge and an understanding of the subject area and, at the same time, prepares students to be professionally qualified teachers of English Language and Literature. This arrangement ensures a close association between the development of subject knowledge and the practice of teaching.

The programme also provides access to a wide range of career opportunities, both within and outside teaching. It offers an excellent grounding for any career path which draws on a deep study of English and of Education together with the organizational, interpersonal and professional skills characteristic of a qualified teacher. Students who successfully complete the programme will hold a recognized teaching qualification that meets the Hong Kong Government’s requirements for professional English language teachers.
