The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies (TIIS) started out back in 1990 as the “Translation Programme”, and has since grown into a major presence in the field. We are among the most internationalized such departments in the region, with an academic staff that comprises members from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Spain, the UK and Australia. The Department offers a BA (Hons.) in Translation, and an MA in Translation and Bilingual Communication (with streams in practical translation, interpreting, and research), while at the research postgraduate level, we provide MPhil and PhD training in a wide variety of areas within the fields of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies.
The Department is a really vibrant place that has long been recognised for its “big family” ethos, its friendliness, and its intellectual energy, as well as its commitment to student experiential learning, for example in the form of industry placements with our extensive list of employer contacts. Beyond the academic curriculum, we also offer plenty of opportunities for students to develop competencies such as team-building and organization skills by getting involved in the life of the Department – whether it be providing interpreting services at departmental functions, participating in department committees, producing our BA Programme newsletter, or being part of the team when we host international conferences.
