The Dean’s Role

Dean Mette Hjort, Associate Dean Min-hua Liu, Associate Dean Lian-hee Wee, and Associate Dean John Winzenburg are keen to ensure that colleagues and students have a clear sense of the role differentiation in the Faculty of Arts. We hope that these brief summaries of our areas of responsibility are helpful in that regard.

As Dean, Prof. Hjort oversees the development of the Faculty of Arts and represents its interests at the higher levels of the University. Her key Faculty-specific roles and responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Overseeing the policies of the Faculty in research, teaching and service
  2. Handling all personnel matters related to hiring, promotion, substantiation, contract renewal and complaints (all academic, teaching, and non-teaching staff)
  3. Serving as the budget controller of all accounts of the Faculty and overseeing all budgetary and expenditure matters
  4. Handling matters related to internationalization
  5. Handling matters related to the branding of the Faculty
  6. Serving as the advocate for, and representative of, the Arts Faculty in the Ho Sin Hang campus redevelopment project
  7. Chairing the following Board/Committees/Panels of the Faculty:
    1. Faculty Board
    2. Faculty Executive Committee
    3. Review/Promotion Panel for Academic/Teaching Staff
    4. Review/Promotion Panel for Non-Teaching Staff
    5. Staff Development Panel
    6. Recruitment Panels
    7. Language Enhancement Programme Committee (University-wide, chaired by Arts Faculty Dean)
    8. Arts and Social Sciences Specialist Panel (a sub-committee of the University’s Research Committee, chaired or co-chaired by the Dean of the Arts Faculty and the Dean of Social Sciences, on a rotating basis)
    9. Minor Programme Committee in Theatre Studies
    10. PhD and MPhil examinations
  8. Handling matters related to the vetting of colleagues’ GRF/ECS proposals and the Faculty’s GRF Incentive Award Schemes
  9. Overseeing the Internal Research Assessment Exercise, the RGC/UGC’s Research Assessment Exercise, revisions to the Faculty Journal List, and the implementation of the Faculty’s guidelines for assessing research outputs
  10. Initiating projects aimed at securing funding from the University’s Strategic Development Fund
  11. Screening the annual report of research activities (common data collection) for submission to the UGC
  12. Overseeing the Faculty’s Academic Editing Service
  13. Overseeing recruitment of PhD students through the UGC’s PhD Fellowship Scheme
  14. Overseeing recruitment of postdoctoral fellows through the RGC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme
  15. Conducting orientation sessions for new staff

The Associate Deans’ Roles

Prof Liu Min-hua

Prof. Liu Min-hua is the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Studies. In this role, she:

  1. Handles matters related to the taught postgraduate programmes
  2. Serves as a member of the Taught Postgraduate Regulations Committee (TPRC)
  3. Serves as a member of the Research Postgraduate Studies Committee (RPSC)
  4. Assists the Dean with the preparation and reviewing of various documents/reports
  5. Monitors TPg quality assurance work, including Quality Assurance panel visits, and the departmental academic advisors system (Postgraduates)
  6. Serves as a member of the Arts Faculty Executive Committee
  7. Serves as Acting Dean when the Dean is on leave; attends meetings on behalf of the Dean when the latter has a scheduling conflict

Prof Wee Lian-hee

Prof. Wee Lian-hee is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies. In this role, he:

  1. Handles matters related to teaching and learning
  2. Serves as a member of the Teaching Development Grant Panel, Teaching and Learning Policy Committee (TLPC), and Undergraduate Regulations Committee (URC)
  3. Oversees the admissions process of the Faculty
  4. Oversees matters related to the Language Enhancement Programme
  5. Oversees the Intervarsity Literary Prize
  6. Oversees the Lion Rock Poetry Readings
  7. Chairs the Broad-based Students Consultation Meeting
  8. Chairs the Outreach Committee and Newsletter Editorial Committee
  9. Assists the Dean with the preparation and reviewing of various documents/reports
  10. Monitors quality assurance work, including Quality Assurance panel visits, and the departmental academic advisors system (Undergraduates)
  11. Serves as a member of the Arts Faculty Executive Committee
  12. Serves as Acting Dean when the Dean is on leave; attends meetings on behalf of the Dean when the latter has a scheduling conflict

Winzenburg

Prof. John Winzenburg is the Associate Dean of Research. In this role, he:

  1. Handles matters related to research
  2. Serves as a member of the University’s Research Committee (RC)
  3. Serves as a member of the Specialist Panel of the RC 
  4. Assists the Dean with the implementation of the University’s research and development strategies, policies, guidelines and initiatives at Faculty level
  5. Seeks opportunities to facilitate productive interdisciplinary research activities across different platforms within the Faculty
  6. In consultation with the Faculty’s Dean and Heads of departments, strategises and coordinates the Faculty’s research and development efforts. This includes assisting the Dean in the review of the Faculty Niche Research Area (FNRA)
  7. In consultation with the Dean and Heads of departments, develops the Faculty’s and respective departments’ and research centres’ Key Performance Indicators
  8. Oversees, together with Heads of departments where applicable, post-award administration activities including research contract negotiation, financial management and reporting, compliance with research protections and other institutional or regulatory requirements, etc.
  9. Develops the research-teaching nexus in consultation with the Dean and the faculty 
  10. Assists the Dean with the preparation and reviewing of various documents/reports
  11. Serves as a member of the Arts Faculty Executive Committee
  12. Serves as Acting Dean when the Dean is on leave; attends meetings on behalf of the Dean when the latter has a scheduling conflict
