Welcome to the Faculty of Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Established in 1961, the HKBU Faculty of Arts is committed to being the forerunner of liberal arts education in Asia for the world delivering academic excellence in a caring, creative and global culture. Closer to home in the nation and region, we are also actively responding to institutional priorities of the moment, including seeking greater integration with our sister unit HKBU-BNU-United International College (UIC) in Zhuhai; as well as repositioning our faculty’s teaching and learning ethos to embrace transdisciplinary programmes interfacing with arts-tech and the University-wide labs in Ethical and Theoretical Artificial Intelligence (ETAI) and Augmented Creativity (AC).  

The Faculty of Arts features five departments (Chinese Language and Literature; English Language and Literature; Humanities and Creative Writing; Religion and Philosophy; Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies) and one Language Centre which serves the entire university. We also support four research centres (in Applied Ethics; Chinese Cultural Heritage; Sino-Christian Studies; and Translation), as well as two endowed institutes for advanced study (the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology and the Mr Simon Suen and Mrs Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute).

In keeping with the University’s mission, the Faculty of Arts is committed to delivering globally relevant and ethically aware teaching and research, with the aim of contributing to the common good. The Faculty of Arts has identified “Well-being, Value and the Public Good” as its overarching faculty niche research area (FNRA) supported by six subgroups. Contributing Arts FNRAs are currently pursuing funded projects making credible community impact in StoryBox Inclusive Playback theatre for disabled students and ethnic minority student empowerment including articulation pathways for creative and professional writing, overseas learning, and internships.
