Academic Year 2015-16

Professor Stuart Christie, Department of English Language and Literature, was appointed by international publisher John Wiley & Sons as Editor-in-Chief for its international academic journal Literature Compass in 2016.

The short story collection “One Body, Two Persons” of Dr. Chow Yiu Fai, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was elected as one of the top 10 good books by secondary school students at the 27th Secondary School Students Good Book Election organised by the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union.

Dr. Tammy Ho of the Department of English Language and Literature, won the Award for Young Artist in Literary Arts at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2015.

Ms. Jenny Choe of the Language Centre received “GE Teaching Award”. She teaches University English courses in the General Education Programme. The selection panel commends Ms. Choe for her effective teaching method which enhances students’ desire to learn and encourages active participation in class activities.

Dr. Chu Siu-cheung, Language Centre, awarded the first prize in the prose category with his book A private domain in the 13th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature.

Dr. Chow Yiu-fai, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, received the recommendation prize in the prose category for his book A long long farewellin the 13th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature.

Dr. Lim Chin-chown, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, received the recommendation prize in the literary criticism category with his work 身體與符號建構:重讀中國現代女性文學in the 13th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature.

A Private Domain, a Chinese prose collection of Dr. Chu Siu-cheung, Language Centre, has won the “Best Book Award” in the literature, history and philosophy category of the second Hong Kong Golden Book Award.

Academic Year 2014-15

Professor Kathleen Ahrens, Head of the Language Centre; Professor Eva Man, Professor of the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing; and Professor Johnny Poon, Head of the Department of Music, have been elected Fellows of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities in 2015.

Dr. Qu Li, Department of Religion and Philosophy, was selected as an outstanding finalist awarded by the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities (HKAH) for his book Concrete Time and Concrete Eternity: Karl Barth’s Doctrine of Time and Eternity and its Trinitarian Background published in 2014.

Academic Year 2013-14

Dr. Chow Yiu Fai, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was awarded the Best Lyrics at the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards 2013 for《囂張》(2013).

Ms. Wu Yin Ching, Language Centre, was awarded the First Prize in the Prose Category of the 12th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature for her book 《蝦子香》(2013).

Dr. Ester Leung, Translation Programme, was awarded the Outstanding Mentor of SE 2013in the Friends of Social Enterprise Award Scheme 2013.

Dr. Ester Leung, Translation Programme, was awarded the HKBU Knowledge Transfer Award. Her project was about establishing a medical interpretation community for the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

Academic Year 2012-13

The book entitled Haircut written by Ms. Wu Yin Ching, Language Centre, was selected as one of the Secondary Students' Best Ten Books in the Election organized by the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union (2012).

Mr. Mak Shu Kin, Language Centre, was awarded the First Prize in the Fiction Category at the Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese 2012, organized by the Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for Plait (2012).

Academic Year 2011-2012

Prof. Martha Cheung, Translation Programme, was invited to teach as a Nida Professor for the 2011 Eugene A. Nida School for Translation Studies in Misano (Rimini), Italy.

Prof. Zhang Hongsheng, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, was awarded the First-class Prize of the Xia Chengtao Ci-poetry Award.

Prof. Lo Kwai Cheung, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was awarded President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work of the Hong Kong Baptist University (2011).

The book entitled Man with a Good Heart written by Ms. Wu Yin Ching, Language Centre, was selected as one of the Secondary Students' Best Ten Books in the Election organized by the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union. Fruits in the Wilds won the Recommended Prizes in the Children and Teenagers’ Literature Category at the 11th Hong Kong Biennial Awards (2011) organized by the Hong Kong Public Libraries.

Dr. Chu Siu Cheung, Language Centre, was awarded the Recommended Prize in the Prose Category at the 11th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Embossed (2011).

Dr. Hung Chi Kum, Language Centre, won the Hong Kong Book Prize for her book 《雙程路──中西文化的體驗與思考 1963-2003》(2011).

Academic Year 2010-2011

Dr. David Francis Urrows, Department of Music, was awarded the 2010-2011 ASCAPLUS Award – Concert Music Division, from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Dr. Ng Wai Hang, Department of Religion and Philosophy, was awarded the 2010 John Templeton Award for Theological Promise.

Academic Year 2009-2010

Prof. Zhang Hongsheng, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, received the First class award of excellent teaching material and scholarly monographs for his publication “Supplement to Shunzhi and Kangxi Volume in Ci of the Qing Dynasty” from university presses in the East China region.

Passer by , written by Dr. Ge Liang of theDepartment of Chinese Language and Literature, was named the Best 10 Short Stories of 2009 by the Chinese Academy of Fiction Writing. His novel Scarlet Finch was named the Top 10 Chinese Novels of 2009 by Yauzhou Zhoukan (Asia Weekly, Hong Kong).

Prof. Lo Kwai Cheung, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was awarded Recommendation Prize in the Literary Criticism Category of the 10th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature for The Foreign and the Local: Literary Criticism (2009).

The drama performance of Dr. Wong Kwok Kui, Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was awarded the Best Director, the Best Actress and nominated for the Best Playwright in the 2nd Hong Kong Theatre Libre Award by 101arts.net, May 2010.

Dr. Chu Siu Cheung, Language Centre, was awarded the First Prize in the Prose Category of the 10th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature for Chalk Circle (2009).

Prof. Lo Ping Cheung, Department of Religion and Philosophy, was invited to deliver a speech at the 2009-10 Bartlett Lecture, on the subject of “The Art of War Corpus and Chinese Just War Ethics Past and Present,” at Yale University Divinity School on 26 January 2010.

Prof. Jane Lai, Emeritus Professor of Translation Programme, was awarded an “Outstanding Translator—Silver Jubilee Commemorative Award” at the 18th Hong Kong Stage Drama Awards by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies.

Dr. Robert Neather, Translation Programme, was officially listed on United Nations roster of Qualified Translators and Editors.
